Texas wildflowers

The first explosion of native wildflowers has begun, the first I found up close being the blanket flowers growing on a street corner in Somerville, Texas. Yesterday I stopped to get a closer look at the bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and tickseed blooming near highway 36 and FM 1948. Washington county will soon be covered in glorious color — this year, the peak bloom time is expected on Easter weekend, though they will continue through next month. And summer varieties will soon follow . . .

One of my granddaughters is studying geology at Cardiff university and when she showed me some photos she had taken of rock samples seen through a microscope I was amazed at the colours and designs.  I persuaded her to email them to me so I could make some drawings and consequently a piece of textile art.
This is the first in a series mounted on a scrap from my grandmother's velvet shawl which must be at least 100 years old.

Winter Bird Notes

If you have ever noticed small flocks of 10-30 birds scatter as you drive down a midwestern winter country road you are very likely seeing Horned Larks.

Another common winter bird in the Midwest is the Dark-Eyed Junco, we usually get the Slate-Colored subspecies in Illinois, but I recently had an Oregon Junco subspecies at my bird feeder.

About a month ago I spent a couple hours in an oak forest that had recently been burned.  The Red-Headed Woodpeckers were abundant!  I suspect the the fire made acorns much easier to find and that they were taking advantage of the easy picking!

When I was in England last autumn I took lots of photos when I was out walking with my daughter, the colours were wonderful and the far views fantastic.  Here's my first sketch done in water soluble Triplus pens.
